The Longest Night – 20th. June.

DCP_0863Tonight was the penultimate night to the longest day of the year and although the numbers were down, again due to World cup football, Sunny weather, folk festivals and holidays etc.  we still had a good evening and welcomed to the club the very talented Eric, who effortless entertained with his distinctive voice and cultured guitar style.

We had to battle with the bright evening sunshine filtering through the doorway and erect a blind to stop Tracey getting heat-stroke on the reception desk.

Keith turned up in his plum coloured chinos and fine baritone voice  getting the audience singing along to his sea shanties. Left hander Brian was up next and I particularly liked his version of  ‘Candle in the Wind’,  Brandon again improves every time he performs and George was his usual ‘off the wall’ self.  Geoff executed his ‘Happy Hour’ with aplomb.  Matt came along to sing a few songs, but apparently did a David Copperfield impression and vanished completely.

The evening was professionally compèred by The Hairy Photographer  who also managed to squeeze in a few numbers.    Hopefully all the wanderers will be back next Friday.

6th. June – A Milestone Birthday.

2014-06-06 22.28.37Long time member Kevin Wardman was enjoying a special birthday this week and the club presented him a cake and bottle of Vin Rouge to celebrate.

Kevin (Mr Consistency) has been entertaining the club since the far off days at ‘The Bee’ and is without doubt one of it’s most popular members, Happy Birthday Kevin.

Also we had ‘newbey’ Stephen popping in from Ruthin, Wendy sang a trilogy homage to the world wars to mark D-Day they were followed by Tom & Linda, Richard, Martin on his Takamine and M.C. Chris remarked “One day we may get a guy called Takamine playing a Martin“, Young Brandon next, who also won the raffle bottle, Tony Grant who was peeved at not attending last week on his birthday, therefore surrendering his right to a cake.

But it was Linda that brought the house down with her Kazoo dexterity on Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street, supported by Tom& Richard….Brilliant! M.C. Chris ‘B’ saying now we know why it’s known as  ‘The Happy Club’.

Singer’s Night 30th May

penniThis week saw another good mix for a singer’s night.  Nice to see Penni and Elaine visiting us from Denbigh and Llansanan, joining half a dozen or so of the regulars.

And Stuart too,  from Caerwys, who treated us to a couple of lovely acapella numbers, and promised to bring along more choir members.

Neil was nursing sore nodules so Chris stepped up to act as M.C. for the evening, unfortunately I think they both buy their joke books from the same shop.

A Raven good night at the club

RavenFriday 23rd of May:

Another good turnout on Friday considering the miserable wet weather and with at least a dozen members missing due to festivals, holidays and sick-notes.

With the ever popular ‘Raven’ popping in to give us a couple of super spots it was an entertaining night in more ways than one.

While all were warm dry and cosy in the club room, I was getting soaked in the cellar whilst changing a beer barrel, I inadvertently unhooked a waist water pipe above my head and reaped the messy rewards from on high, not nice.

But also with Raven we had Annie & Bob – Vinny – Bam – Kevin – Wee Willy – Linda & Tom – Richard – Wendy – Chris B. and, new to the club, Bob Lawson who braved the weather all the way from Birkenhead.

The night was compered amusingly by George in place of Neil.  So nice to enjoy the relaxed happy atmosphere and never before have I heard such realistic cockerels, dogs and howling wolves to accompany Ravens Little Red Rooster, a brilliant finish to another thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Singer’s Night 11/05/14

A great night despite being down in numbers due to absentees attending the festivals. We only had around 30 in, which was a big drop from the 80 plus on the previous club night.

Terry did a super job as M.C. in the absence of Neil, and Tracey ran the reception desk in equally expert manner.

We had some new faces experiencing the Happy Club for the first time and they all said they would be back for more next Friday.

Guest Night – Merry Hell

140425-0502Another super night at the Rhyl Acoustic on Friday and an official all-ticket record attendance of 80 plus, with the SOLD OUT special guest night appearance of Wigan based folk band ‘MerryHell’

They went down a storm as usual, supported by some of the club’s regular talented floor singers.

Also we had a visit from Dave Jones of Folk North West Magazine who said he was impressed with the standard of our performers and the friendly atmosphere and general set-up of the club.

Chris Birchall was wielding his trusty video camera on the night, and the results will be available soon.

Yet again folks, many thanks for your great support, it makes everybody’s hard work worthwhile.

Singer’s Night -14/4/14

leo-rachelAnother super night to start the Easter weekend and a plethora of youngsters in the club again to help lower the average age.

Joe was back and recording some stuff for his uni-work he also performed with his band ‘Leo’s Hide’.

We also had new face and talented Rachel making her debut and she promised to return again.

On the other side of the coin we had {O.F}. Tony Grant, if you don’t know what O.F. stands for, look on the notice board. It’s always a pleasure to hear Tony sing when he’s on top form and he surely was on Friday.

All helped along by our great regular performers, the evening was a perfect warm-up for next weeks visit of Merry Hell.

Sorry to say that all the tickets have been sold out and with a room capacity of 80, we have to adhere to on safety grounds.

Thank you all for your continued support.
